Developing ABC Nursing with the help of Korle-Bu, Ghana.
Nurses from the UK, Ghana and Ethiopia met at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana to continue developing a practical 5 day Advanced Burn Care (ABC) course for nurses working in resource poor environments. The course will be piloted in March 2016 at the National Institute for Burns and Plastic Surgery, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh and then adapted for delivery in Nepal and Ghana.
Many nurses working in burns in Asia and Africa receive little or no formal post-graduate training in burn care. Nurses play a critical role as the first point of contact for the burn patient and within the multi-disciplinary burn care team. The ABC nursing will address this gap through a hands-on format to help nursing develop practical solutions to common problems and challenges. It will cover a broad range of topics including infection control, dressings, wound management and healing, pain control, assessment, nutrition etc.
UK-based nurse Dominique Navet also handed over the revised Essential Burn Care course to the team at Korle-Bu, led by Director Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah. Korle-Bu and Interburns signed a cooperation agreement for the continued delivery of EBC in Ghana.
The nursing team helped to deliver EBC training to a staff from across Ghana and Sierra Leone at Korle-Bu in leading a number of small group discussions and skill stations.
