Delivering EBC for UK Med

Essential Burn Care (EBC) is one of Interburns core programmes. Designed ‘from the ground up’ for low resource settings, it covers all aspects of burn care from assessment and early treatment to infection prevention, psychosocial care, rehabilitation and splinting in order to give burn patients the best chances of recovery and return to a normal life.

We are delighted to have delivered the first ever EBC live and online for the frontline medical aid charity, UK Med, this week. Re designed for their roster of UK based healthcare professionals, EBC online focussed on the challenges, and ways to overcome these challenges, that health professionals in these settings apply to get the best outcomes for their patients.

Small group discussions focussed on assessing size and depth, the importance of fluids and problems with electrical and chemical burns, as well as dealing with pain and suffering, nutrition and paediatric burns. Lectures and videos on mass casualty disasters, the psychosocial affects of burn injury and what injuries to expect, gave participants a very broad view of the huge impact that burns can have on an individual and population.

A clear highlight of the course was the participation by Interburns faculty from France, Ghana, India, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa and the UK who gave unique perspectives on managing burn patients in spite of limited resources, frequent challenges, and often overwhelmed health facilities.

Feedback when asked about the best parts of the course includes: ‘Having faculty based globally’ and 'Very detailed burns management, excellent learning points to take away, covered all aspects of burns care, guidance that can be used in UK hospital settings and low resource areas'.

UKMed have asked us to deliver this course again in future. We look forward to the opportunity.

Many thanks to the fantastic team: Sian Falder, course lead, Dominique Potokar, Ziphilly Sichinga, Dr Richard Nnabuko, Alberta Rockson, Anthony Olekwu, Nikki Allorto, Pratibha Sharma, Ruthann Fanstone, Anirban Mandal, Amy Hughes.
