EBC, Accra, Ghana
Interburns held an EBC training in Accra, Ghana, in partnership with Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the Ghanaian Burn Association, and the Pan African Burn Society (PABS). 78 participants from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Niger, Kenya, Ethiopia and Cote d’Ivoire were trained in key aspects of burn care. This was the first step in a partnership with Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to improve burn care in Ghana over the next 2 years.
Korle-Bu is the only tertiary level hospital in the southern part of Ghana and the Plastic and Burn Unit is a national centre of excellence that trains future plastic surgeons for Ghana and the West African Sub-Region. The unit has a 69 bed capacity and, in addition to treating burn patients from across Ghana, receives patients from other countries in the region including Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Togo. Korle-Bu has an established reputation as a national training hub for Ghana and a regional centre for West Africa.
Interburns is working in partnership with Korle-Bu to develop the Burn Centre into an international training centre offering surgical fellowships to burn professionals from across Africa, based on the successful model of the Interburns Training Centre (ITC) in India. Korle-Bu will be the lead local partner for further EBC training in Ghana and West Africa.
Interburns would like to thank Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah and his colleagues at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the Pan African Burn Society and all the volunteer members of the training faculty who gave their time.
