Burn Surgery: Look into the Future 10 years.
In a recent key note speech to the Australia New Zealand Burn Association (ANZBA) conference, Professor Jim Gallagher, Director of the William Randolph Hearst Burn Centre, New York, and Weill Cornell Medicine, shared his vision that the world burn community can spearhead the development of healthcare systems and improve outcomes globally.
Quoting Martin Luther King’s words spoken in 1966 ‘Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane’, Jim advocates that burn care is ‘the best surgical community to lead the way on improving healthcare systems’.
Building systems requires teamwork - burn surgery is defined by teamwork; burn surgeons care for all ages from birth to death and are active at all stages, from triage through to palliative care. Burn surgery is as concerned about first aid as the need to be prepared for a disaster scenario; it also focusses on prevention through to advanced surgical treatment.
