In January 2015 Interburns sent a multi-disciplinary team to work with our partners in Ghana, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The team worked closely with staff at the National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns unit (RPSB) at Korle-Bu, which has the largest burn unit in Ghana and is the main government teaching hospital for the south of Ghana. This collaborative work included an assessment of the strengths and gaps of the unit and recommendations for improving the service, using a range of tools developed by Interburns specifically for burn services in Asia and Africa. This project was funded through the Wales for Africa Health Links programme.

The Interburns team also visited the second government burn unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi and carried out a similar assessment with local staff in the burn unit there. Interburns also met with a number of key people in the Ghanaian Ministry of Health, Health Services and leadership of both hospitals, to discuss the development of a national strategy for improving burn care and prevention in Ghana.

Future plans for our partnership with Korle-Bu include the participation of the team’s therapist in the ABC Rehabilitation programme in Dhaka in March 2015, the development of an Advanced Burn Care Nursing module in May 2015, Essential Burn Care training in Kumasi and ongoing collaboration to win funding to implement a national plan to improve burn care across Ghana.
