Essential Burn Care training in Digboi, India (September 2014)

On the 12th and 13th of September 2014, the Burn Care Foundation delivered a 2 day burn care programme that combined the Interburns course Essential Burn Care with sessions on public awareness and prevention of burns. Burn Care Foundation is a partner of Interburns in India and is based at Nemcare Hospital, Guwahati, in Assam. This programme was held at IOCL (AOD) Hospital , Digboi and patronized by the Medical Department of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (Assam Oil Division) – IOCL(AOD).


The program began with the Inaugural session, where Mr. Barun Barpujari, Executive Director, IOCL (AOD) attended as the chief guest. Mr. Kaushik Borah, ED also attended the program as guest of honor. Inaugurating the program Mr. Barpujari lauded the effort of the Medical Department in organizing the program. He also offered his appreciation to Dr Bhupendra Prasad Sarma, Convener of Burn Care Foundation for his efforts in establishing the first Burn Unit at AOD Hospital way back in 1994, when he was working there as the Chief Medical Officer. Dr. P.K.Saikia, DGM (Medical) , Mr Kaushik Borah and Dr. Hitesh Baruah, Managing Director of NEMCARE Hospital and Secretary of Burn Care Foundation also spoke in the session.


After the Inaugural session, the actual training program on EBC began. Dr, Shobha Chamania, one of the founders of Interburns and Chief of the Interburns Training Centre and Burn Unit at Choithram Hospital and Research Centre, Indore, gave a brief outline of Interburns and its activities. The training on burn care was then imparted by Dr. Shobha Chamania, Dr Bhupendra Prasad Sarma , Dr. Nareswar Sarma and Dr. Kabita Sangma Choudhury of NEMCARE Hospital. A total of 64 doctors, nurses and paramedics from Digboi and neighbouring places participated in the program. This multi-disciplinary course explained how to manage burn injured patients systematically by audio-visual means, group discussions, demonstration of scenario and by arranging skill stations.


In the evening, a Public Awareness Program was held in the Golden Jubilee Complex, where Dr Shobha Chamania and Dr Bhupendra Prasad Sarma spoke on the subject of Prevention and First Aid in Burns. About 130 people attended the program and there was a lively and interactive discussion on the prevention of Diwali burns.

On 13 September 2014, a School Education Program on Prevention and First Aid in Burns was organized in the same venue. About 150 students from different schools of Digboi participated. Dr. Bhupendra Prasad Sarma and Dr Shobha Chamania spoke on the practical aspects of First Aid and Prevention of Burns. The students were also given home tasks on burn prevention and booklets on burns, written by Dr Bhupendra Prasad Sarma were also distributed amongst the participants. Both the programs were very well received by the participants and 97% of participants evaluated the course as excellent or good.
