Essential Burn Care (EBC)

EBC is a comprehensive course for healthcare professionals working with burn patients in intermediate level health services. It is not a course about emergency care and does not dictate specific treatments for specific situations.

Materials have been developed with practitioners from low income settings who have had wide experience in the care of the burn patient in different local situations. EBC emphasises participation through interactive mixed method sessions around lectures, small skills stations and activities, to encourage and foster teamwork among participants.

Topics include:

  • Prevention

  • Assessment and Classification of Burn Severity

  • Initial Management

  • Fluid Resuscitation

  • Infection Prevention and Hygiene

  • Management and Surgery of the Burn Wound

  • Rehabilitation, Nutrition and Paediatric Burns

Sections on pain and suffering, psychosocial concerns, quality improvement and communication skills are also included, taking into consideration the variety of social characteristics in resource-poor environments.
