Burn Training at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College, Bangladesh (November 2015)
Shaheed Suhrawardi Medical College Hospital (SSMC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh has a dedicated and newly refurbished burn unit of 36 beds and is one of the major hospitals treating burns patients in Dhaka. Interburns has been working with SSMC for a number of years. Our partners in Bangladesh, Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF), arranged a training programme in Essential Burn Care for staff at the service and a number of recently graduated intern doctors, to give them exposure and improved understanding about the challenges of burn care in Bangladesh. ASF also invited staff from Savar Upazila Health Complex, a primary-level community hospital that is also receiving support from Interburns and ASF through a 3 year project funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID)
Due to the large number of participants for the training, this programme was delivered in two separate EBC courses over two consecutive days on the 11th and 12th of November 2015. The course included many interactive sessions and small group work to facilitate effective learning, with a mixed faculty including surgeons, a psychologist and physiotherapist. The course was introduced by ASF’s executive director, Selina Ahmed (pictured below).
ASF has now delivered EBC training to 286 medical personnel over the last 2 years in the local language (Bengali), with external support from Interburns and in collaboration with the National Institute for Burns and Plastic Surgery and the Bangladeshi Society of burn Injuries. A further 3 EBC trainings are planned for regional medical college hospital in the rural periphery of Bangladesh before the end of the year. ASF will also play a critical role in the forthcoming Interburns Advanced Burn Care (ABC) Nursing programme at the National Institute in Dhaka in March 2016.
