In 2012, Interburns developed the first operational standards for burn care services in low and middle income countries, based on the findings of an international consensus meeting held in Kathmandu, Nepal in January 2012. The standards provide hospital staff and policy makers with guidelines for the human and physical resources a burn service needs in order to achieve good outcomes for burn patients. These standards were recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as ‘an important stepping stone towards improving the health systems to which the vast majority of the world’s burn patients present for care, as well as an important contribution to the overall public health challenge of preventing burns worldwide.’
In early 2013, Interburns won a grant from the UK Department for International Development (DfID) to implement the operational standards in Bangladesh and Nepal over the next 3 years. Through this project we will develop the standards into a quality improvement tool, working with burn units in 15 hospitals in the 2 countries. Interburns will train over 600 professionals in improved burn care and develop a faculty of 150 instructors, transforming the standard of care for patients and enabling local teams to disseminate training widely throughout their countries. When combined with training, assessment and other capacity-building support for burn services, the standards enable us to provide hospitals and health facilities treating burns with a comprehensive programme of support to improve the care they deliver to patients.
